DeadBase XI

The Complete Guide To Grateful Dead Song Lists

(updated 11/3/99)
The latest edition of The Complete Guide to Grateful Dead Song Lists is finally off John's drawing board, and at the printers where it faces an uncertain future: it may or may not be ready in time for the holidays. The printers hope to have the books to us by December 12th, but we have learned to be wary of such promises.
This edition features the long awaited returns of GarciaBase and WeirBase. For the first time we have included the popular Every Time Played cross-references for these lists.

DeadBase XI Features

Set Lists - citations on 2,314 Grateful Dead concerts from 1965 through 1995, listing a total of 37,149 songs. After much consideration, we have retained the two column format. We sympathize that it is harder on the eyes, but the 90 pages saved have gone to very good use, and it is easier to locate shows with more dates on a page. We have improved readability somewhat with a slightly larger font size, and by making sure that most songs titles don't break across lines.
Songs Played - basic information on the Dead's songs including first and last performance dates and other artists who have recorded them.
Discography - a comprehensive listing of the Grateful Dead on vinyl, video, and in print.
Table - how often songs were played each year.
Statistics - a statistical overview of the Grateful Dead's song selections.
Played/Not Played - a look at how the Dead's playlist evolved, highlighting songs as they join and leave the repertoire.
Every Time Played - a cross-reference of each song and every date that it was played (used to help place those mislabeled tapes, this is a very popular feature among tapers).
Places Played - every date played at each venue (also used to locate tapes).
Feedback Revisited - in order to make space for other features, the full surveys have been retired for this edition. In their place we present the favorite tapes selected from Feedback X, and the favorite song versions of all songs polled going back to DeadBase VI (making this our most complete favorite versions ever).
Reviews - Over 450 reviews on Dead shows with an emphasis on live recollections from people who attended the concerts.
GarciaBase - a favorite section of DeadBase is back with some exciting new features:
  • Song Lists - citations for 1,136 Jerry Garcia solo shows from 1971 to 1995, listing a total of 10,724 songs.
  • Songs Played - basic information on the Jerry's solo songs including totals, and first and last performance dates.
  • Every Time Played - this popular cross-reference has finally made it to the solo bands.
  • Feedback - the results of a survey conducted on our web site of Jerry's solo efforts.
WeirBase:
  • Song Lists - citations for 723 Bob Weir solo shows from 1974 to 1999, listing a total of 7,913 songs.
  • Songs Played - basic information on the Bobby's solo songs including totals, and first and last performance dates.
  • Every Time Played - this popular cross-reference has finally made it to the solo bands.
Furthur:
  • Photographs - shots from three years of Furthur tours, and other Dead-related events since 1995.
  • Feedback - the results of a survey conducted on our web site of the Furthur tours.
Other Ones:
  • Song Lists - citations from the only year this group toured. We still pray they change their minds and tour again.
  • Reviews - reviews of Other Ones concerts
Phil & Friends - song lists from Phil's collaborative solo efforts through 8/22/99 at Santa Barbara.
Odds & Ends - an eclectic collection of Grateful Data, including BIODTL beats, Minglewood substitutions, Dark Star maps, Anagrams, Guest List, First-played List, and space to keep track of your favorite song versions.

What's Not In DeadBase XI?

Unfortunately, the DeadBase archives have become too large to fit into a single edition. As has been our tradition for a while now, we have rotated features out in order to make space for others. This time around we have benched our Feedback and Deadhead Surveys as well as the popular Tape Timings chapter. The other major asset to DeadBase X, not in the future edition is DeadBase '95 with its intensive look into the final year of the Grateful Dead including complete reviews and timings, and extensive photographs and survey results. Over a third of the book has been replaced.

Future Plans

We hope to continue publishing so that restore and we can build on displaced features, as well as introducing new ones. The Grateful Dead canon is enormous, and much work remains to be done unlocking its mysteries and treasures.
